Dr.Miguel C.Riella was born in Blumenau , in the province of Santa Catarina, Brazil on April 11,1945. Son of Carlos Riella and Edith Gracher Riella, began school in Blumenau and finishing 2nd grade in Curitiba where attended medical school from 1963-1968. He then took an Internal Medicine Residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City (1970-1973)and a Renal Fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle.(1973-1975 under Belding H.Scribner, pioneer of chronic hemodialysis.

In 1976 upon his return to Brazil, began his activities at the Evangelic University Hospital in Curitiba where he established a Nephrology Division and a Nutritional Support Service.

In March of 1977 he initiated a chronic hemodialysis program and in 1980 the first kidney transplant was performed at the institution.

In September of 1980 published his first book on Principles of Nephrology and Electrolyte Disturbances (Guanabara-Koogan) and on the same year initiated a CAPD program (Peritoneal Dialysis).

In 1984 established a Kidney Foundation- Pro-Renal, a non-for profit organization to help kidney patients and to support kidney research.

In 1985 his second book was published:Nutritional Suppport (Guanabara-Koogan) and in 1987 was elected President of the Latin American Society of Peritoneal Dialysis and President of the Latin American Federation for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

In 1995 was elected President of the Brazilian Society of Neprhology and in 1999 was elected council member of the International Society of Nephrology.

In 2001 published his third book, Nutrition and the Kidney, together with the dietitian Cristina Martins

At present is Professor of Medicine at the Catholic University of Parana and the Evangelic School of Medicine.He is Chief of Nephrology at the Evangelic University Hospital and Director of the Islet Cell Lab at Catholic University.
